Hurricanes are the largest storms on Earth. In the Atlantic Basin, they typically from June through October, between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn and over water warmer than 80 degrees F.
Hurricanes are made up of many thunderstorms surrounding an intense center of low pressure. This center is where the eye forms. The warm water under a hurricane is crucial for maintaining a storms central pressure and sustained winds greater than 74 mph. As water evaporates from the ocean's surface it rises and condenses into the hurricane. Once this happens, the heat released by the latent heat of condensation provides abundant fuel to maintain the storm. This keeps a hurricane going until it eventually makes landfall.
