If you're like many, you may think of wind speed when you consider how destructive a hurricane is. However, the storm surge from a hurrican can be just as destructive and even more deadly. Storm surge is just that -- a surge of water pushed toward the shore by the force of the winds swirling around the storm. The highest storm surge occurs in the right front part of the storm where winds blow onshore at landfall. This advancing surge combines with our normal tides to create the hurricane storm tide and can increase normal water levels by 15 feet or more. Add in another 8 to 10 feet for waves on top of that, and you can have a 25 foot wall of water inundating an area in a matter of minutes. This rapid rise in water level can cause severe flooding in coastal areas, especially if the storm strikes at high tide. Weighing 1,700 pounds per square yard, water is very powerful and can cause extensive damage. Repeated pounding by waves along with floating objects like trees and debris from other structures can easily wipe any house from its foundation.
